Post 9/11

It really was the most beautiful blue sky morning. I was getting ready for my classday. I turned on the TV to see the news and instantly learned about what had happened.

Our apartment just over the Brooklyn Bridge.

There were two towers behind the smoke. That you could see the towers from the living room window was a selling point of the apartment. They burned for weeks.

I had a 35mm camera and went toward downtown from Canal Street toward Church, Franklin, Leonard, Worth, Thomas, Duane, Reade, and Chambers Streets.

Holland Tunnel Closed

The abandoned Holland Tunnel, NYC side, immediately following the 9/11 attacks. No people around, no traffic at all. Just silence.

Tribeca Candlelight Vigils

Several candlelight vigils steadily grew in parks and streets across lower Manhattan on the evening of 9/11/2001. Many added to this candle circle over the following hours with flags, flowers, and small items of remembrance. Various people gathered here so as not to be alone at such a terrible time. These vigils were symbols of hope and solidarity.

The composition contains four separate and sequentially layered “stepped” photographs I shot with a 35mm camera while walking from Canal Street to the World Trade Center site on 9/11/2001. These photos were taken from low-to-ground perspective while moving from left to right.

Thank You, Rite-Aid One-Hour Photo -- Centre Street

Last but not least, thank you very much to these customer service representatives working the one-hour photo counter at the Centre Street Rite-Aid on 9/11/2001, who developed these pictures and more. It took great patience on their part as hundreds stormed the store yelling out their own names so to receive their packets of photos taken of the 9/11 attacks just hours before. It was like the floor of the stock exchange.

The young man seen here handed me back my camera and told me I had one picture left to take. So with their permission I snapped this one of them quickly. Thank you both to whomever you are, and wherever you are today.
